Where We Stand Now
Over the last few months, we have been in extensive communication with our insurance company Brotherhood Mutual and the Ellenwood Homeowners Association. From these discussions, we have gained more clarity on what is covered by our building insurance policy and how we can work with our neighborhood to see that together we repair and rebuild for the better.
Where we stand with our insurance company:
We have been approved to replace all the roofs, including the flat membrane roofs.
All the stained glass will be repaired and/or replaced based on a separate rider that we have on our insurance policy.
All our stone spires will be replaced with stone to match the original design intent.
It is still unclear whether the slate roofs will be replaced with slate again. This discussion will continue.
It is not apparent that insurance will replace our gutters with copper, but we are working through that detail.
We anticipate that total repair costs will be over $3M. We are continuing to assess the damage and what Brotherhood will cover.
Brotherhood Mutual provided a $100,000 advance check to help with cash flow.
Our policy will not cover any damage incurred to objects that are not attached to the actual building; this includes lamps, signs, trees, stairs, fencing, etc. A bid proposal to repair the Chapel Play Garden River Birch trees has been obtained in the amount of $1899.
Where we stand with our neighborhood:
We received an assessment from the Ellenwood Subdivision for paving, lighting and landscape repair and replacement of which Memorial’s share will cost an estimate of $5400.
There were 100 trees damaged or destroyed in the neighborhood with a plan to plant 80 new trees. Ted Spaid, an elder at Memorial and founder of SWT Design, has volunteered to help the Ellenwood Homeowners Association with tree planting design and approach.
We have issued a $3000 payment to Ellenwood Homeowners Association as part of our assessment to help with initial clean-up.
The committee formed to oversee this rebuilding process anticipates necessitating a full year to complete all items and to work through the insurance process. We are grateful for the ongoing support, encouragement, and hope offered during this time.
